A Visit to Hiltz Moving & Storage | The North Shore Moms

Sometimes I have the opportunity to visit local businesses, and peek behind the scenes. I have never in my life seen a forklift lift a 7-foot storage crate 3 stories in the air, and never really considered it a must-see event, until last week when I visited Hiltz Moving & Storage in Gloucester, MA. It was really fun to watch! Hiltz is a family-owned moving and storage business located at 23 Kondelin Road, in Gloucester.

Hiltz Moving & Storage was started in 1940 by Robert Hiltz. They specialize in safely storing your belongings for both short and long-term rentals. You may be interested in working with Hiltz if you are moving, but have a gap between when you leave your existing home and can move into your new home. Or if you are renovating part of your home and need to get your furniture and belongings out of the way during the renovation.

Hiltz Moving & Storage offers a full-service experience. They service all towns on the North Shore and specialize in Cape Ann moves. A team of qualified movers will come to your house to safely wrap and move your belongings to the storage facility, where they are carefully packed in a 7’x5’x7’ storage crate and stacked into place, in their temperature-controlled warehouse, until you are ready to take them back.

In addition to furniture, appliances and other home goods, Hiltz Moving & Storage stores artists paintings, family heirlooms (like pianos) that people don’t have space for, seasonal furniture, and more. They can receive shipments for businesses, like a design company that has the furniture for their residential design projects sent to Hiltz’s warehouse and stored until the install date. All of this is easy for the Hiltz team to manage due to the large access roads leading to their facility and the equally spacious loading dock.

If the forklift was my favorite part of the visit, this is a close second! Hiltz Moving & Storage changed hands at the beginning of this year. Jane Hiltz and Marshall Carpenter were the most recent owners and operators of the business, and last year they decided they were ready to retire. Jane learned about a young family who had just started a local moving company: Transylvania Moving Company, from a Meet a Mom Interview with local mom, Diana Ghiura, that was published on this site! (Love that so much!) She reached out to Diana to see if she and her husband, Cosmin, would be interested in expanding their business. They all met to talk about a deal and Diana and Cosmin learned that the original founder of Hiltz Moving & Storage was named Robert…the same name as their 3 year-old son. It was meant to be!

Jane and Marshall hoped that the longstanding business would remain a family business and it’s now in good hands with the new owners. Diana and Cosmin plan to keep things largely the same so that current customers will continue to enjoy the high level of service they know and love from Hiltz Moving & Storage. If you hire them, the movers who come to your house will be from the Transylvania team, who I personally hired for a move at my house last summer and can highly recommend.
