My family and I moved from one house in Middleton to another last summer because we wanted to live on a quieter street. Even though this was a local move we still used professional movers and I was pretty stressed when it came to finding a trustworthy moving company. I actually posted the question to our Instagram community and ended up picking a mover that a couple other moms suggested. I wish I had known about today’s local business, Transylvania Moving Company at the time! If you’re planning a move this year or just want to get to know an interesting Beverly mom better, keep reading for our interview with Diana Ghiura!

Where are you from originally and what town do you live in now?
I am from a small town in Transylvania, Romania. That’s where I met my husband when we were just kids. We moved to the United States in 2015, and we currently live in Beverly.

How many children do you have and what are their age(s)?
Our son, Robert, has just turned 2.

What’s your favorite family activity on the North Shore?
We love going apple picking at Russell Orchards. We also live very close to Independence Park in Beverly, so we try to go to the beach as often as possible. We do the Danvers-Wenham Swamp Walk almost every week, and it’s incredible how it changes every season. Our son always goes too close to the water, and we recently told him that the beaver lives there, and he’d bother him. So now he asks to see pictures with a beaver, and he is mindful whenever we go there. There are so many great places in the North Shore, we love it here, and I would not want Robert to grow up anywhere else.

Where’s your favorite place to eat and/or shop on the North Shore?
Toscana Bar Italiano is our favorite restaurant. We dine in, do take-out, use their services for birthday parties, you name it. Best food in the area!

We also love Village Pancake House in Rowley for breakfast. We go there more often in the summer, as we usually run to Todd’s Farm Flea Market right after breakfast – late birds, I know, but we get all the $1 deals at 11 am.
For shopping, we go to Tendercrop Farm in Wenham and Herrick Farm in Rowley. I especially love the fresh tomatoes we get from Herrick. They smell and taste like the tomatoes we used to eat growing up in Romania.

Tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to start Transylvania Moving Company.
I used to work for a recruitment agency in Romania that would send workers to the States in various moving companies. My husband (boyfriend at that time) wanted to try too. So, he got accepted to this smaller Boston moving company, and I tagged along. They offered me a job in the office, and I ended up working there for almost eight years. I helped this company grow a lot, and I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to learn many things which helped me pave my future and Transylvania Moving Company. I feel that opening our business in 2020, was the right next step for us to continue to build our name and reputation in this field.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have one of our childhood friends here as well so we invited him to be part of Transylvania Moving Company, which he gladly accepted. So, the guys are running the show on the moving jobs while I run everything else.

Somedays, my life is a beautiful chaos, running a business, maintaining a neat home, guiding a toddler through life. But I try to switch into lower gears, just to enjoy these precious moments.

Transylvania Moving Company has a unique name. Is there a story behind it?
Oh, boy! It took us months to come up with the name, and it was right under our noses. I must admit I wanted the company to be called something else, but my husband came up with Transylvania Moving Company which made complete sense. It’s where we are coming from, where our families are, and where our son will spend some summer vacations. Plus, we have to admit, it’s a great conversation starter. So, kudos to my husband!

Where is Transylvania Moving Company based and what areas of the North Shore do you service?
We are based out of Beverly, and we do both local and long-distance moves, including cross-country relocations.

Do you offer packing and/or storage options?
Yes, we are a full-service company. We provide packing, moving, and storage solutions for all our customers. I think we are a little different from your average moving company as we design our services based on our customer’s needs. When I pick up the phone and I speak to a customer, I spend my time listening and taking notes. Then on the day of the move, the crew expands the same type of service. We are not in this business to rush into getting your move done and take your money. We want to bond with our customers and understand what they need and want during their move. We are building a network if you wish, and that can only be accomplished by providing the exact services the customer requests and expects.

If a family is packing their belongings for a move on their own, what tips do you suggest they follow?
Don’t do it, just give us a call! My husband and I used to live in a 1-bed-apt in Somerville before we moved to Beverly 5 years ago. When I had to pack our apartment, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Imagine having to pack and move an entire 3-bed-home? No, thank you!

If you must do it yourself, I’d say plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time for the packing. Start getting boxes at least 1 month before your move date. Always wrap your dishes, china, and all breakable items in paper (packing paper, newspaper), and be generous with it. Try to mark your boxes per room with colored tape, like red for the living room and blue for the master bedroom, and so on. That will save you a lot of time during the unpacking.

What is the best piece of mom advice you ever received?
Sleep well and rest before the baby comes. Once he gets here, it’s a different life!

What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “me” time?
Oh, I love this! I try to have some “me” time almost every day, even if it’s for half an hour, that matters a lot. I usually read, I’m all about Stephen King and his dark stories, or watch a Marvel movie – give me Captain America, and my brain disconnects from reality. I also get regular mani-pedis and facials. I’m in the process of finding a great massage place, so I’d add that to the list too.
