The field at Colonial Park School, in Stoneham, is the flagship location for Soccer Shots Metro North & West and Sunday mornings see an influx of families arriving at the field ready to learn soccer skills and have fun. There are three, 30 to 45 minute suggestions, with 4 classes per session. Each session is divided by age group, starting with Minis (ages 2-3). Parent participation is highly encouraged in the Mini classes.

The next level up is the Classic program and those classes are broken up into groups of 3 & 4 year olds and groups of 4 & 5 year olds. Classes focus on basic soccer skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting. Creative and imaginative games foster learning, and a positive character trait is highlighted each session such as respect, teamwork, and appreciation. This particular Sunday the trait was acceptance.

For kids ages 5-8, Soccer Shots also offers the Premier Program. The Premier Program is designed for those who want to build upon what they’ve learned in the Classic Program with increased scrimmage time, but the program also caters to kids in this age range who are new to soccer. So don’t worry if you think your kid will be behind because they haven’t played before, they’ll fit right in at Soccer Shots!

Each class (regardless of age) starts with the coaches introducing themselves and reviewing the Three Rules of Soccer (Listen to your coach, believe in yourself, and try your best). They also introduce the word of the day, (i.e. acceptance) and its meaning on and off the field. The introduction is encouraging and sets a great tone for the session!

Next kids warm up, and these warm ups are fun and center around a theme. When I visited there were two themes, depending on the age group. The younger kids focused on Spring Gardening and the older kids’ theme was Dinosaurs–the warm ups included stomping around like a Stegosaurus!

The themes continue on as the coaches review skills learned in prior weeks and then teach a new one. Many of the classes had been working on controlling the ball and passing.

Of course with this being soccer, there are ample opportunities for each child to score a goal! The coaches have a fun way of “waking up the nets,” that the kids loved.

One of the things that I loved to see was how the coaches encouraged each kid to not only score, but to also cheer on their teammates when it’s their turn. You could hear enthusiastic shouts of, “Score a Goal,” ringing out across the fields.

Most classes end with an age-appropriate scrimmage, where kids are encouraged to work as a team and put into play some of the skills they have learned. Coaches make sure to keep all kids engaged and if a child seems uninterested in any portion of the class, including the scrimmage, they will work to get them engaged in a way that is most comfortable for them.

In addition to being a great program for learning to play soccer, Soccer Shots also stands out for helping kids establish a comfort level with sports, listening and learning outside of a classroom setting, and working as a team with peers.

The Soccer Shots coaches were all patient, enthusiastic and working hard to connect with the kids. Many of the students have been coming to Soccer Shots since they came to this area in 2022, and have grown up with the program, while others started at Soccer Shots and gained the confidence and skills to move on to play in town sports and club teams.

If your child is too young for town soccer, too nervous to go on the field, or really would just benefit from a fun soccer learning environment with a low coach-to-player ratio, Soccer Shots may be right for you!
