Have you heard of Documentary or Lifestyle Family Photography?
I had not until I recently connected with photographer (and our newest partner) Lauren Justice. Lauren is a photojournalist with ties to Gloucester, who’s prior work experience includes photography for newspapers and magazines. She’s spending the months of August and September in Gloucester with her family, and is excited to be expanding what she offers to North Shore families as well.

Lauren says, “So much of the work I’ve done in the past has included documenting the lives of families through whichever phase of life they are in, whether that means photographing everyday routines, joyful celebrations, life transitions, or moments of enduring struggle. I really enjoy the opportunity to get to know people on a more personal level and hope that the images I take share something special with depth and compassion.”

How does Documentary and Lifestyle Family Photography work?
To work with Lauren, you will choose a day for her to visit your family and spend time capturing candid moments. This will allow more opportunity for authentic images that show personality and natural interactions. Most of the time you and your loved ones will not be looking directly at the camera but will instead be enjoying each other’s company as Lauren takes photos without giving much or any direction. She can also take a few posed portraits (for those holiday cards!), but primarily will be in the background letting the scene unfold naturally.

What really stood out to me about this approach to family photography, is that so much of the time moms are left out of the candid photos, because we are the ones taking them. While it’s important to commemorate each year with a family photo where everyone is looking (and hopefully smiling), so much of our lives as moms happen behind the scenes in the small moments…playing, cuddling, laughing at our kids’ silly antics. This is a way to capture more of that.

What are some occasions where a family might want to book these types of photos?
Lauren loves photographing daily routines, special moments, spontaneous get togethers or day trips, and traditions or places of significance. Life changes so quickly sometimes and even the small moments we take for granted on a day-to-day basis can make us feel nostalgic later in life. When you set up a shoot with Lauren, you can discuss some of the ways your family spends time together and make a plan around that.

Lauren explains, “Do you have any family traditions or family recipes or games you play together? Do you enjoy going to the park or to the beach or on hikes? Out on the boat, fishing, or camping? Maybe you love the way your partner reads to your kids before going to bed – we can capture that. Maybe you love the mornings, whether they are peaceful and calm or chaotic and spontaneous. I’m here for it all. Whether we spend our time at your home or out somewhere else, we’ll come away with nice, natural moments that you can look back on as the years pass.”

How long does a session last?
Lauren is offering two types of sessions: one that lasts up to three hours and one that lasts all day (up to 8 hours). The longer session could be great if a person wants to have photographs of something they’re doing during the day as well as something before or after. An example: prepping for a day at a local farm; time spent at the farm apple picking, riding a hay ride and more: hanging out; then dinner and putting the kids to bed.
