I’m excited to introduce Alyssa Jackson to our community today. Alyssa is a North Shore native and mom of 2, who just opened a new salon. I connected with Alyssa a couple months back and am so impressed to see the progress she has made building her salon and her business. She says she always had a passion for hair, but I think it’s obvious she also has a passion for entrepreneurship and I can’t wait to see her business take off! Keep reading to learn more about Alyssa and her salon, Volition

Where are you from originally and what town do you live in now?
I am originally from Peabody and lived there until I was 22. After I got married we purchased a home and are currently living in Rowley.

How many children do you have and what are their age(s)?
I have two children. Claira, is 7 years old and Cole is 4.

What’s your favorite family activity on the North Shore?
I would have to say that our favorite family activity on the North Shore would be the beaches! We are so lucky to live so close to so many amazing beaches.

Where’s your favorite place to eat and/or shop on the North Shore?
Right now my favorite place to eat on the North Shore would have to be CK Pearl or Daniella’s Cafe & Market, however we frequent the Blue Boat in Rowley for curbside! For shopping I like the open air shopping and variety at the MarketStreet Lynnfield.

You’re the owner of Volition, a brand new Danvers salon. Tell us a little bit about your background and why you decided to open the salon.
I’ve always had a passion for hair, even to the point I picked my high school choice, Peabody High School, solely because of the cosmetology program. I was lucky enough to have two amazing teachers that helped to fuel that passion and I was able to get my license straight out of high school. I worked in multiple salons training and had my apprenticeship in an amazing salon in Newton as well as in Hamilton. I then began my career as a stylist with a salon in North Andover. After managing, as well as being a lead stylist for 10 years, I decided that the next step would be for me to open my own salon. I knew I wanted a smaller, intimate, boutique salon that truly focused on the client and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Now here we are!

What are some of the services you specialize in at Volition?
At Volition, we truly specialize in client care. It may sound cliché but one of the things that our clients love and comment on most is that fact that we actually listen to them and help them achieve exactly what they are looking for at every appointment, not just their first. On top of that, we strive to continue our education and are very passionate about color theory. We excel in all color techniques from blonding to gray coverage.

Where is Volition located?
Volition is conveniently located at 141 Pine Street in Danvers. We are extremely close to Route 1, 95, 128, downtown Danvers, and the mall area.

You also have a wonderful plan in place to promote other women-owned businesses in the area. Can you tell us more about that?
Now that Volition is open, I plan to connect with local women-run businesses and feature them in the salon. My goal is to feature one new business each month and display their business information along with a selection of retail products (if they offer them) or examples of their work. My goal is to build awareness of local, women-owned small businesses and create a community surrounding us all!

Any tips for balancing work & motherhood?
My best tips would be to actually write things in your calendar so you can stay on top of your schedule. You don’t have to hand write it, I use my phone calendar but making sure that I put in all family events and use alarms for the important things helps immensely! Also, carving out scheduled time for yourself to get things you need done helps me to feel more available to my family because I am not worrying about all the things I need to do.

What is the best piece of mom advice you ever received?
That would definitely have to be that you can’t pour from an empty cup! Self care is so important and without that you are definitely running on empty.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “me” time?
My favorite thing to do when I need some “me” time would probably be binge watching a new show or just driving around with my iced coffee listening to my favorite music.
