Today we have a special interview with…a DAD! Dr. Gary Mendese is a board certified Dermatologist with practices in his hometown of Peabody, Massachusetts as well as three locations in New Hampshire. He and his wife, Alyson, are also raising their family in Lynnfield and shared some of their favorite local activities, along with more about their business: Dermatology & Skin Health.
Where are you both from originally and what town do you live in now?
I’m from Peabody and my wife, Alyson, is from Salem. We now live with our five kids in Lynnfield.
How many children do you have and what are their age(s)?
We have five kids: Isabella (16), Elijah (14), Caden (12), Jax (7) and Finn (3).
What’s your favorite family activity on the North Shore?
We love visiting Salem Willows, walking around downtown Salem, Lynch Park in Beverly, exploring “Main Street” shops all over the North Shore, and visiting the Gloucester beaches.
Where are your favorite places to eat and shop on the North Shore?
Our favorite restaurants are Anmol, in Beverly, and Maggie’s Farm, in Middleton. We love shopping at the North Shore Mall, of course!
Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started Dermatology & Skin Health?
Having grown up in Peabody, I always wanted to see patients back in my hometown one day. I lived in many parts of Peabody as a kid, went to college at UMass Amherst, medical school at UMass Medical School in Worcester, then did my dermatology residency training at Boston University/Tufts University and did my surgical fellowship just outside of Boston. Our practice’s primary/first location is Dover, NH…started prior to my joining in 2005. But so happy to have a location in my hometown.
Where is DSH located?
Right in Centennial Park across from Boston Children’s at Peabody (in the same building as Microsurgical Eye Consultants).
What are some of the most popular services available at DSH?
Our most popular services are skin checks, treatments for acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer surgery, as well as cosmetic procedures such as Botox, fillers, microneedling, laser, etc. We really offer all aspects of medical and cosmetic dermatology.
What service do you recommend most to moms?
Skin checks for sure! Everyone needs at least one in my opinion. And for those interested in preventing/reversing the effects of the sun and “father time,” a cosmetic consult is always an option.
Have your service offerings changed during the pandemic?
We offer all services, albeit with more spacing between appointments, and more frequent sanitizing, consistent mask wearing and of course, social distancing.
How do you balance running a business with family time?
It’s not easy! This is a true partnership between myself and Alyson…both of us help with the kids and with the nuts and bolts of the practice. But we try to “turn off” work when it’s dinner time. Again it’s not an easy task but we certainly do our best!
What are your favorite at-home, family activities right now?
Watching movies together with popcorn, sledding (it’s winter!), walks around the neighborhood, and playing family games.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “me” time?
We both love to listen to music and get a massage. Patrice at Laura Lanes Skin Care, in Salem, is the best.
