Nazir’s Fine Jewelry is a North Shore institution and family business started by Nazir and Patricia Shamsuddin in 1984, at the Northshore Mall. In 1990, they opened a second location in Hamilton at The Plaza, now known as The Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing. Flash forward to 2019, and they’re located in the most charming old store from the late 1600’s, The Hobbs House, in Wenham.
I visited Nazir’s recently to meet Emily Mehta, the daughter of Nazir and Patricia, who now works at the store with her dad. She gave me a tour of the store (complete with a fireplace in every room!) and the jewelry, watches and other gorgeous gifts they stock.
The story of how Emily joined the family business is an inspiring one…she’s a mom to 3 kids–a 5 year old daughter and twin 2 year olds (a boy and a girl). She started her career in financial services, but after the birth of her first daughter found her way to retail. Then when her daughter was 2 she decided to go back to school in NYC to study diamonds and she became a Certified GIA Diamond Graduate.
Armed with this new knowledge, she dove headfirst into the family business at Nazir’s and brought with her a fresh perspective. She even designs some of their current jewelry pieces herself!
Having grown up at the store with her parents, she knows many of the customers from when she would help out as a kid. Though these days she’s often working with the next generation from these families.
She says, “I am so happy to come to work and be part of special moments in a client’s life; from engagements to marriages to babies to promotions and retirements, I feel lucky to be privy to such intimate moments.” Adding, ”It is so rewarding working with multiple generations of a family during these monumental occasions.”
She also told me that in addition to extensive knowledge of diamonds and precious stones, a jeweler must also be a skilled secret keeper. An aspect of the job I never considered, but love! Imagine being the first person to know when someone is thinking of proposing? Or helping pick out a push present for a deserving new mom?
